The Cornell Method

The Cornell Note-Taking System was developed by Walter Pauk at Cornell University in the 1950s and published in How to Study in College (first edition 1962). It is still taught in university study-skills centres today, and it is built around two things cognitive science does support: retrieving information from memory rather than re-reading it, and spacing that retrieval out over time.

The Page Layout

A Cornell page is divided into four regions before you take a single note:

  • Header — course name, date, and lecture topic
  • Notes column (right, ~6 inches wide) — the main writing area during the lecture
  • Cue column (left, ~2.5 inches wide) — left blank during the lecture; filled in afterward
  • Summary box (bottom, ~2 inches) — left blank during the lecture; written after

The Five Rs

1 · Record

When: During the live lecture or while reading.

Write down main ideas, facts, and details in the Notes column on the right. Use short sentences, symbols, and abbreviations to keep pace with the material. Completeness matters more than neatness at this stage.

2 · Reduce

When: Within 24 hours after class.

Review your notes and condense them into the Cue column on the left. Write concise keywords, vocabulary words, or exam questions that correspond to the notes opposite them.

Pauk found that most forgetting happens in the first 24 hours. Reducing your notes while they’re still fresh dramatically improves long-term retention.

3 · Recite

When: During your independent study blocks.

Cover the Notes column with a sheet of paper. Look only at your Cue column, then state the answers aloud in your own words. Uncover the notes to check your accuracy.

This is active recall: you are retrieving the answer instead of recognising it. It feels harder than re-reading your notes, and that difficulty is the point — recognition is what fools you into thinking you know the material.

4 · Reflect

When: Immediately after reciting.

Think deeply about the material:

  • How do these facts fit what you already know?
  • What is the significance of these principles?
  • What questions remain?

Write a 3–4 sentence synthesis in the Summary box at the bottom of the page.

5 · Review

When: Weekly throughout the term.

Spend 10–15 minutes quickly reviewing your accumulated Cornell notes, focusing only on cues and summaries. This spaced repetition prevents cramming and locks material into long-term memory.

Why It Works

The Cornell system forces three cognitively distinct operations:

  1. Encoding — writing notes during the lecture
  2. Consolidation — reducing and reciting soon after
  3. Retrieval — weekly review against cue questions

Each operation strengthens the neural pathways for recall. The physical page layout makes skipping any step obvious — an empty cue column means you haven’t reduced; an empty summary means you haven’t reflected.
